Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong) is an advanced practice of Buddha school self-cultivation, founded by Mr. Li Hongzhi, the practice’s Master. It is a discipline in which “assimilation to the highest qualities of the universe—Zhen, Shan, Ren (Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance)”—is the foundation of practice. Practice is guided by these supreme qualities, and based on the very laws which underlie the development of the cosmos. The focus of Falun Dafa practice is the mind, with the cultivation of one’s mind and thoughts, or “Xinxing,” being singled out as the key to increasing Gong energy. The height of a person’s Gong is directly proportionate to that of his Xinxing. The concept of “Xinxing” encompasses the transformation of virtue (a white form of matter) and karma (a black form of matter). It also includes forbearance, discernment, and abandonment—that is, forsaking ordinary human desires and attachments, and managing to endure the most trying of ordeals. Much is encompassed by the concept. Falun Dafa also includes the cultivation of the body, which is accomplished by performing specific exercises. It consists of 5 sets of gentle exercises which includes a meditation practice. These exercises help quickly open up one’s energy channels, purify the body and obtain stress relief and inner peace. The movements are simple, effective and suitable for all age groups. The Beginnings In 1992, Mr. Li Hongzhi (referred to respectfully by practitioners as "Master" or "Teacher") first taught Falun Dafa publicly in the city of Changchun, China, and then continued to lecture all across the country. Those who attended experienced such profound benefits that they told friends and family. As a result, the number of practitioners grew very quickly, solely by word of mouth. By 1998, at least 70 million people had taken up the practice in China alone. Mr. Li. Hongzhi has received ‘Sakharov Prize’ for ‘Freedom of Thought’ and ‘2009 Outstanding Spiritual Leader’ award. He has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 2001. Today, Dafa is practiced and cherished by over 100 million people in over 100 countries. Falun Dafa and its founder, Mr. Li Hongzhi, have received over 12,000 awards and proclamations from government bodies worldwide for the benefits that have been experienced by individuals. How To Learn Falun Dafa : The Teachings : Falun Dafa emphasizes upgrading ones moral character (cultivation of mind and heart). The meaning of the term “character,” as it is used in the practice of Falun Gong, is somewhat broader than its dictionary definition. In Zhuan Falun, Master Li describes it this way: “So what is character? Character includes virtue (which is a type of matter), it includes enduring, it includes awakening to things, it includes giving up things—giving up all the desires and all the attachments that are found in an ordinary person—and you also have to endure hardship, to name just a few things. So it includes a lot of different things. You need to improve every aspect of your character, and only when you do that will you really improve.” In general, this is done by studying Zhuan Falun, the core text containing the teachings of Falun Dafa, and by living according to the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance. The importance placed on the elevation of character separates Falun Dafa from most other qigong practices popularized in China over the past several decades, as other practices focus primarily on physical exercises for health and fitness. Falun Gong : It gives an introductory level discussion of the principles of Falun Dafa and the concept of cultivation. It also illustrates and explains how to do theexercises. Zhuan Falun : It is the most comprehensive and essential teachings of the practice. It has the Compilation of 9 lectures of Master Li Hongzhi.
